Splash Dogs

This past Saturday, Darryl and our eldest yellow lab, Fred competed in Splash Dogs at the Fresno Home and Garden Show (March 2-4) Splash Dogs is a competition to test the distance the dogs can jump from a ramp into a large pool. It is a large event that travels throughout the States and claims great champions. It is open to all breeds and all ages. At the end of the day, everyone is there to have fun, but the dogs and handlers are serious about the competition. The "top dogs" have trained very hard to earn the agility and distance to become top jumpers. The current record for a labrador retriever is 26.05 feet and the record for the most distance stands firm at 27.08 feet!

This was Fred's first competition and we were nervous he wasn't going to adapt to the ramp well. Within 10 minutes, he was flying off of it like a champ! After a few practice runs in front of an audience, Fred was ready to go. He was first on the ticket. Him and Darryl set up on the dock, and off like a bullet Fred leaped for the pool. You are allowed two competition jumps and one practice. Fred earned a 13' and a 13.03', well beyond what is expected for a first-timer! He took 1st of the group that day, and 3rd out of the whole competition!

We spoke with Scott Trowbridge and his dog Pepper, who competed in the Pre/Extreme division and ended with 2nd place! His black labrador jumped an impressive 21.08 feet in the competition! He told us some stories and shared some tips of the trade. This is him and Pepper!
